Cinepak is a proprietary, software-only video file codec. The codec was developed in 1990 by SuperMac Inc., and was designed to play small movies on 386 and 030 systems from single speed CD-ROM drives. Once a cutting-edge technology, Cinepak played well on most computers then in existence. However, it is no longer as widely used as more current codecs.
Cinepak provides very reliable data rate limiting at relatively low speeds. However, because Cinepak must compress movies at least 10:1, its performance is seriously degraded at and above speeds of 4x. Cinepak's picture quality and data delivery rate are lower than those of more modern video codecs. Most current codecs produce a better quality of picture and are capable of delivering the data necessary to do so at a lower bitrate than Cinepak.
